Israeli Literature as a Window to Israeli Society

A course of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

Israeli Literature as a Window to Israeli Society

A literary journey that offers a fresh and fascinating examination of Israeli society since the birth of the State in 1948.

An encounter with Israeli society through the pens of Israel’s leading writers, where students will discover an Israeli society that is original, contemporary, honest, and proud.

Profound insights into the Israeli national psyche as reflections of the mythic Israel are matched by poetry and prose that is challenging and self-critical.

The course will take you on a journey through some of the most important contributions to Israeli literature, we will explore the nature of Hebrew as a Jewish/Israeli language, explore the landscape of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, reflect on the Holocaust, feel the trauma of war, hear women’s voices and revisit the dream and love of the land.

All texts are provided in a handbook for students to follow with references if you want to purchase the full texts yourself!
