Searle Kochberg is a maker and writer on cinema and other performing arts. He edited the textbook, Introduction to Documentary Production (2002) and contributed to Introduction to Film Studies (2012) and Promotional Culture and Convergence (2013).His short documentaries focus on space, memory and identity and include Irene Runge: My Way (2002) Leaving the Table (2007) and L'Esprit de l'Escalier (2010) all of which enjoyed exposure at several international film festivals. A more recent production is a site specific narrative ‘experiment’ in animation and live action with a non-fiction tone, entitled Dream Life of Debris (2014).
From 2012 to 2014 Searle produced 9 films and TV shows for the Rainbow Jews project, funded by the UK National Lottery Heritage fund. For the next 2 years he then contributed a series of films looking at religious ritual in the same UK LGBT+ Jewish community, as part of the project Ritual Reconstructed which was funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council.
At the moment, Searle is completing his Practice based PhD on film documentary and the representation of Gay Jewish men in London.
